FRUIT ATTRACTION TO PRESENT AN EXTENSIVE PROGRAMME OF TECHNICAL CONFERENCES AND ACTIVITIES AIMED AT ENCOURAGING THE CONSUMPTION OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

The regulation of the fruit and vegetable sector in the United States, including those related with mass distribution, modernisation of greenhouses and contribution of technological centres towards accelerating the process of innovation on farms, will be the main topics addressed during the technical sessions held during the second Fruit Attraction trade show.

The second edition of FRUIT ATTRACTION, the trade show for the fruit and vegetable industry co-organised by IFEMA and FEPEX from 20 to 22 October 2010 at Feria de Madrid, is to supplement the trade fair activity with an intensive programme of activities which will convert the trade show into a high-profile forum for presenting visitors with the sectors latest innovations.

Among the activities taking place are the noteworthy technical conferences which will include the most relevant subjects of interest for the horticultural industry, as well as the actions aimed at promoting the consumption of these products.

The technical conference programme taking place within the framework of FRUIT ATTRACTION will bring together national and international experts who will be focussing on the solutions to three key issues for sector professionals. To coincide with the show’s official opening, on 20 October, the conference programme will be kicking off with a session on The regulation and organisation of the fruit and vegetable sector in the United States, including its relationship with mass distribution. The venue will be the Retiro Room, located in hall 10 of Feria de Madrid. The debate, led by a representative for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will analyse, among other things, the efficient measures adopted in the USA in the area of agricultural and trade policy such as the organisation of production and commercialisation at origin in Marketing Orders.

On 21 October there will be a conference on Greenhouse modernisation and improvements in energy efficiency, with the aim of increasing productivity to improve farms’ competitiveness. Participants will be given the chance to see how the adoption of new technologies can have a positive impact on the economic performance of their crops at the same time as reducing negative environmental effects. On this occasion, Alicia Villauriz, secretary general of Rural Affairs will give the opening address and the first speech followed by key representatives from the Murcia Regional Ministry for Agriculture and Water, and the Andalusian Regional Ministry for Agriculture who will be presenting the policies of their respective communities on this issue. The director of the Las Palmerillas Experimental Station in Almeria will also be participating in this conference.

Lastly, the importance acquired by public research centres both for the advancement of projects planned as well as for the transfer of knowledge gained on the sector have become key instruments for fostering innovation in agri-food industries. A subject which will be analysed on Friday 22 October in the session The contribution of technological centres towards accelerating the farm innovation process. The Murcian Institute for Agriculture and Food Research and Development, and the Lleida Agri-food Science and Technological Park, the Centre for Food Technology and Innovation of La Rioja (CITA) and from the National Centre for Technology and Food Safety (CNTA), located in Navarra will also be taking part in this conference.


CREATIVITY IN THE LAND

In addition FRUIT ATTRACTION will be hosting a whole range of other activities including the 2nd Gastronomy Conference on the Fruit and Vegetable Sector for the Horeca Channel, FRUIT FUSION 2010. This meeting, organised in conjunction with madridfusión and the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, has the prime objective of presenting the very best produce from the land and their interpretation and use in cooking as well as providing a platform for promoting and encouraging the consumption of fruit and vegetables in the Horeca Channel.

As a new feature this year, the FRUIT FUSION gastronomy conference programme includes the participation of world-famous chefs together with an attractive line up of Spanish celebrity chefs. As a complement to the show cooking demonstrations, FRUIT FUSION will include a special area devoted to the art of cocktail making and will also be presenting the 1st National Fruit Carving Contest.
